Tuesday – November 7, 2017– The Role of Feelings
Mark 5:24b-34 (NIV) A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
The woman in this story was not happy in her current circumstances. She had a constant flow of blood that made her unclean to her society and she was required to live an isolated existence. She had been in this condition for 12 years. She hoped for a better future. She had faith for a better future. Her faith set her on a path of action. Despite the law forbidding her being in a crowd, she became a part of one anyway. She pressed into the crowd determined to reach Jesus. She didn’t need to touch Him and didn’t want to, because of her uncleanness. All she needed was to touch the very edge of His clothes. The result was amazing. She felt what she had been suffering with for years leave her body. Her faith led her to a new reality.
She felt something and so did Jesus. He felt power leave His body. That shows that the nature of Jesus was to bring healing. He didn’t even need to know of her need as long as she reached out to Him in faith. Despite being pressed by a huge crowd, He became aware of one woman. She came to Him in faith while at the same time battling fear. When He insisted on knowing the circumstances of the power leaving His body, she trembled before Him. She expected Him to be like the others that she had sought help from; surly and mean, wanting something from her even when they offered her nothing in return. However, Jesus was not like anyone else that she had ever dealt with in her entire life. He was kind and compassionate and changed her life forever and that included the way that she felt. It all happened, because she came to Him in faith.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that when people come to You in faith, no matter the condition of their lives, they will never be the same. Thank You for changing me forever.
