Friday – March 9, 2018 – The Spirit, Death and Ultimate Life.
Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV) How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Romans 1:1-4 (NKJV) Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
Romans 8:11 (NKJV) But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
The only way to overcome death is by dying. That is a paradox that every grateful heart receives. Jesus came to earth to die the death that we could not die so that we can live the life that we could not live. Everything that the Holy Spirit did in the life and ministry of Jesus was to prepare the way for Jesus’ death.
That not only means that Jesus was empowered to work miracles, it also means that the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to die. He would not abandon that mission no matter how much pressure He felt in the Garden of Gethsemane. Read Matthew 26:36-56. He endured the cross because of the joy that was set before Him. Have you ever considered what joy is being spoken about in Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV)? Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The joy is the people who would come to faith because of His sacrifice.
Certainly, Jesus saw the need acutely in the Garden when even His closest friends could not pray with Him. They had no power to pray and Jesus knew that they had no power to save. He had to die for them as much as He had to die for you.
The good news is that the grave did not permanently hold the body of Jesus. The Holy Spirit raised Him from the dead and He appeared before more than 500 eye witnesses and many of those witnesses saw Him ascend into Heaven. When He ascended, He had equality with God restored and while He is seated at the right hand of the Father, He is interceding for us in Heaven while the Holy Spirit intercedes for us on earth.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank You for being so completely involved in the life and ministry of Jesus. Because You were, we have confidence for our lives here on earth with even greater confidence for our eternities.
