Wednesday – March 28, 2018 – Growing in Character.
Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Sanctification has to do with maturity. It literally has to do with separation. It is about being separated from something while at the same time being separated to something. The believer has been set apart from sin, the world and Satan, while at the same time, having been set apart toward God and His purposes. When that happens, you will grow in Christ-likeness.The Spirit causes the continued transformation of moral and spiritual character. It is an inside job. It is the result of the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us. There is a difference between mechanical activity and internal organic growth. External growth can easily be seen and sometimes even deliberately draws attention to itself. In regards to spirituality, external activity does not always indicate internal growth.
Both John Wesley and Martin Luther were very religious, and their lives were full of external religious activity before they were ever born again. In other words, they were able to grow their resumes but not themselves. Luther even taught in a Bible College. Their personal testimony is that their lives were full of anxiety and worry. They were working for God, but they could not be certain that they were doing enough for God. Their internal growth began to take place when they were born again. They had been working for God and proved to be very gifted, but not fruitful. The gifts of the Spirit can change other people’s lives through you, but it is the fruit of the Spirit that will change you.
The fruit of the Spirit in your life will say, “Lord, You know what is best for me and no matter what comes my way and even if I do not get my way, and I will trust You.” The fruit of the Spirit simply says, “Lord, You know best.”
Prayer: Thank You Holy Spirit for dwelling inside of me, and by doing so, You grow my character and make me more like Jesus.
