Tuesday – April 3, 2018 – The Holy Spirit Upon You and Within You.
Acts 1:8 (NKJV) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
John 14:16-17 (NIV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
There are two distinct experiences that believers in Christ have with the Holy Spirit. The experiences are an anointing upon your life and an anointing within your life. The anointing within your life has to do with maturity that results in becoming more Christ-like. It has to do with character development. The anointing within your life is a process that begins at the time of conversion. The anointing upon your life deals with power for acts of service. The Holy Spirit comes upon you and there is an apparent dynamic that the Holy Spirit is at work. This experience should be recurring throughout the life of a believer. The book of Acts uses several synonyms to express this same experience. In addition to baptism, this experience is said to come upon, to fill, to be full of, to come to rest on, to be poured out upon, and to be anointed. No matter what it is called, the experience is dynamic and life changing.
When Jesus was speaking to the disciples in Acts 1:8 about the Holy Spirit coming upon them, He is speaking to those who already had received the Holy Spirit. John 20:21-22 (NKJV) So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit…”
Among those listening was Peter who just 50 days before denied that he even knew Jesus. He was so afraid of death that he distanced himself from Jesus and knew that he had become a disgrace to the gospel message. However, after the Holy Spirit came upon him, he became a different person. In his first sermon in Acts 2, he boldly confronted the Jews and accused them of joining with wicked men to murder Jesus. That sounds like a changed man to me. Because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit on his preaching, 3000 men came to faith. From that moment on there was a different dynamic about Peter and he was noted for performing miracles and preaching with signs following. He became a great leader in the church and many followed his example.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank You for the promise of Holy Spirit baptism and for Your desire to not only change me on the inside, but also to empower me on the outside.
