Monday – April 9, 2018 – The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV) Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
There are two broad categories of gifts that the Spirit provides for followers of Jesus. They involve those who speak for God and those who serve God. Within those categories are three classifications and are generally called the manifestation gifts, the motivational gifts and the ministry gifts. They are broken down into those classifications as an aid to learning. One of the gifts is listed in all three classifications. That one is the gift of prophecy (prophet). Some of the others are listed in two of the classifications but not in the third. If breaking down the gifts into these classifications is helpful to your learning, then embrace it, if it is not, then think of them as one long list of gifts. One thing is clear however, and that is gifts have been made available to believers in Jesus, so they can serve others as faithful stewards of what God has given.
Regarding the manifestation gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, they are associated with power and cannot be accessed in purely natural ways. They are supernatural in nature and can be placed in three different groups. Those groups are the supernatural ability to speak, the supernatural ability to know and the supernatural ability to act. These gifts take you beyond your human capacity and place you in situations where only God can accomplish what needs to be done. That is exactly where God wants us to be, at a place where we are totally dependent on Him.
The purpose of these gifts is to build up and make the body of Christ whole. They are called gifts because they cannot be earned or bought. They are not meant to be kept for the exclusive use of the recipient but are used for the benefit of others. They are given for the common good. Finally, they are energizing, providing us with the strength or might that is necessary to combat our spiritual enemies as well as to meet the needs of others.
Prayer: Thank You, Holy Spirit, that you manifest Your presence in the lives of believers and enable us to do what we cannot do on our own, whether individually or corporately.
