Friday – April 20, 2018 – Honor One Another.
Romans 12:10 (NIV) Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
What is the difference between theory and practice? As the old saying goes, “In theory, there isn’t any,” but in reality, they can be worlds apart. Have you ever tried to honor someone above yourself over a protracted period? You might honor someone above yourself if that person has more prominence than you, but what if he/she has less prominence than you? In our culture, it is difficult because we make no distinction between prominence and importance. The more prominent, the more important and the less prominent, the less important.
Jesus recognized that there is no distinction regarding prominence and importance in the gift of giving when He pointed out the widow who gave everything she had. Mark 12:41-44 (NIV) Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
Jesus called honor to the person with the least means rather than the people with the greatest means. To Him, she deserved more recognition than all the rich and prominent people knowing that she was the least likely to receive it. The important point is that we all have our part to play even if it seems insignificant. We must know that it is very significant to God, especially when we give our all.
On the other hand, (Read Matthew 8:5-13) Jesus recognized the faith of the Roman Centurion, a very prominent man, because the Centurion understood authority and that he was not deserving of Jesus answering his request. He knew that he was not even worthy to have Jesus come under his roof. His humility and Jesus’ grace is what produced the miracle. His measure of faith received the recognition of Jesus and he received what he asked for.
Prayer: Thank You, Holy Spirit, that we each have a gift, and whether it is prominent or not, You see them all having equal value.
